Caring for Cropped Ears in XL American Bullies

Ear cropping is a procedure that some owners of XL American Bullies choose to undergo for aesthetic reasons or to adhere to breed standards. If you are considering ear cropping for your dog or have already had the procedure done, it's essential to understand how to care for your dog's ears during the healing process. Below is a guide on how to properly care for cropped ears in your XL American Bully.

#### Understanding Ear Cropping

Ear cropping involves surgically altering the shape of a dog’s ears. The procedure is typically done when the dog is between 8 to 12 weeks old. It’s important to have this procedure performed by a qualified veterinarian who has experience with ear cropping in dogs.

### Post-Operative Care for Cropped Ears

1. Follow Your Veterinarian's Instructions:

- Your veterinarian will provide specific care instructions tailored to your dog’s needs. Always adhere to their guidelines for the best recovery.

2. Keep the Area Clean:

- Gently clean the edges of the ears with a saline solution or antiseptic recommended by your vet. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could irritate the skin.

3. Monitor for Signs of Infection:

- Regularly check the surgical site for redness, swelling, discharge, or an unusual odor. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

4. Prevent Scratching and Rubbing:

- To prevent your dog from scratching or rubbing their ears, consider using an Elizabethan collar (e-collar) until the ears have healed sufficiently.

5. Limit Activity:

- Keep your dog calm and limit vigorous activities, such as running and jumping, to avoid stressing the healing ears. Short, controlled walks are ideal during this time.

6. Pain Management:

- Your vet may prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort after the surgery. Ensure you administer these medications as directed.

7. Ear Taping (if applicable):

- In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend taping the ears to help them stand properly as they heal. Follow the vet’s instructions on how to tape the ears correctly and when to remove the tape.

### My Personal Method

I buy nasal strips and super glue, then I clean the puppy's ears with soap and water.

I cut one of the nasal strips at one end to shape it like the ear and glue it with super glue on the inside of the ear, making the ear stretch and place it in the correct posture. This method is the most effective one I’ve developed after more than 10 years of experience in this field.

8. Regular Check-ups:

- Schedule follow-up appointments with your veterinarian to monitor the healing process. They may need to remove stitches or assess how well the ears are healing.

9. Nutrition and Hydration:

- Ensure your dog is eating and drinking well during recovery. Good nutrition supports the healing process.

10. Be Patient:

- Healing can take time, and it’s essential to be patient as your dog adjusts to their new ears. The final appearance may take weeks to stabilize.

### Some Considerations

Before deciding to crop your XL American Bully’s ears, make sure to research the laws and regulations regarding ear cropping in your area, as it may be illegal in some regions.

### Conclusion

Caring for cropped ears in an XL American Bully requires attention, patience, and adherence to veterinary guidance. By following the recommendations outlined above, you can help ensure a smooth recovery for your dog. Remember that each dog is unique, so always prioritize their health and well-being throughout the healing process.
